Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is a condition that affects the gum tissue and the bone supporting the teeth. The disease is caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth that forms into plaque. When plaque is not removed it can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning.
Over time, the bacteria in plaque and tartar can cause inflammation and damage to the gums, leading to periodontal disease. This condition can range in severity from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontitis.
Stages of Periodontal Disease
Below is an overview of the stages and progression of periodontal disease.
Gingivitis & Early Periodontitis
Gingivitis is characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing. Gingivitis is reversible with proper treatment and good oral hygiene practices at home.
If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to early periodontitis. At this stage, the infection begins to spread to the bone and other structures supporting the teeth. Symptoms include bleeding when brushing or flossing, as well as bad breath and a persistent unpleasant taste in the mouth.
Moderate Periodontitis
As periodontal disease continues to progress, it can lead to moderate periodontitis. Symptoms at this stage include receding gums, tooth sensitivity, and the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums.
Advanced Periodontitis
Without treatment, periodontal disease can progress to advanced periodontitis. At this stage, there may be significant bone loss, loose teeth, and changes in the way the teeth align. Tooth loss may also occur. It’s a good idea to get advice from a periodontist or a dentist.
Treatment of Periodontal Disease
Fortunately, there are many excellent surgical and non-surgical treatment methods for periodontal disease.

Cosmetic procedures can have a profound impact on your smile, boosting your self-esteem and confidence.
Sinus Lift
We work with many patients who require dental implant placement to restore their smiles. For some patients, a lack of sufficient bone in the upper jaw can make it challenging to place an implant in the desired location. This can occur due to a variety of factors, including genetics, trauma, or long-term tooth loss.
A sinus lift procedure can be a valuable option for patients who want to receive dental implants but do not have adequate bone density. A sinus lift procedure adds bone to the upper jaw and provides a stable foundation for dental implant placement.
Will I Need a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift procedure may be necessary if you have any or all of the following situations:
- If you have lost multiple teeth in the posterior region of your upper jaw.
- If a substantial amount of bone is missing from the posterior region of your upper jaw.
- Are missing most of your maxillary teeth, but require support for dental implants.
Restorative dentistry is sometimes necessary to ensure long-term best results, and creating a smile that will last a lifetime is our entire goal.
Frenectomy
A frenectomy is a surgery to remove or adjust the frenum, a small tissue connecting the lips, tongue, or cheeks to the jawbone, which can sometimes cause issues such as:
- Speech difficulties
- Gum recession
- Orthodontic issues
- Difficulty with denture fitting
If the frenulum is too tight or long, it can cause gum recession, tooth sensitivity, decay, and even tooth loss. A frenectomy can address these issues and improve gum health.
