Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a condition that affects the gum tissue and the bone supporting the teeth. The disease is caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth that forms into plaque. When plaque is not removed it can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning.

Over time, the bacteria in plaque and tartar can cause inflammation and damage to the gums, leading to periodontal disease. This condition can range in severity from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontitis.

Stages of Periodontal Disease

Below is an overview of the stages and progression of periodontal disease.

Gingivitis & Early Periodontitis

Gingivitis is characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing. Gingivitis is reversible with proper treatment and good oral hygiene practices at home.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to early periodontitis. At this stage, the infection begins to spread to the bone and other structures supporting the teeth. Symptoms include bleeding when brushing or flossing, as well as bad breath and a persistent unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Moderate Periodontitis

As periodontal disease continues to progress, it can lead to moderate periodontitis. Symptoms at this stage include receding gums, tooth sensitivity, and the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums.

Advanced Periodontitis

Without treatment, periodontal disease can progress to advanced periodontitis. At this stage, there may be significant bone loss, loose teeth, and changes in the way the teeth align. Tooth loss may also occur. It’s a good idea to get advice from a periodontist or a dentist.

Treatment of Periodontal Disease

Fortunately, there are many excellent surgical and non-surgical treatment methods for periodontal disease.

Sinus Lift

We work with many patients who require dental implant placement to restore their smiles. For some patients, a lack of sufficient bone in the upper jaw can make it challenging to place an implant in the desired location. This can occur due to a variety of factors, including genetics, trauma, or long-term tooth loss.

A sinus lift procedure can be a valuable option for patients who want to receive dental implants but do not have adequate bone density. A sinus lift procedure adds bone to the upper jaw and provides a stable foundation for dental implant placement.

Will I Need a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift procedure may be necessary if you have any or all of the following situations:

  • If you have lost multiple teeth in the posterior region of your upper jaw.
  • If a substantial amount of bone is missing from the posterior region of your upper jaw.
  • Are missing most of your maxillary teeth, but require support for dental implants.
If your treatment plan does involve a sinus lift, you’ll be fully educated about the procedure.
Restorative dentistry is sometimes necessary to ensure long-term best results, and creating a smile that will last a lifetime is our entire goal.

Frenectomy

A frenectomy is a surgery to remove or adjust the frenum, a small tissue connecting the lips, tongue, or cheeks to the jawbone, which can sometimes cause issues such as:

  • Speech difficulties
  • Gum recession
  • Orthodontic issues
  • Difficulty with denture fitting

If the frenulum is too tight or long, it can cause gum recession, tooth sensitivity, decay, and even tooth loss. A frenectomy can address these issues and improve gum health.

FAQ's

What is periodontal disease and how is it different  from gingivitis?

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures of your teeth. Gingivitis is the earliest, mildest stage of gum disease, characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing. The good news is that gingivitis is completely reversible with proper treatment and improved oral hygiene.

If gingivitis goes untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more serious condition where the infection spreads below the gum line and begins destroying the tissues and bone that support your teeth. Unlike gingivitis, periodontitis cannot be completely reversed, but it can be effectively managed and controlled with professional treatment.

What are the early warning signs of gum disease I should watch for?

The early signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste in your mouth
  • Gums that appear to be pulling away from your teeth
  • Changes in how your teeth fit together when you bite

Many people don’t experience pain in the early stages, which is why gum disease is often called a “silent” condition. This makes regular dental checkups crucial for early detection and treatment.

What treatment options are available for different stages of gum disease?

Treatment varies depending on the severity of your condition:

For Gingivitis:

  • Professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
  • Improved daily oral hygiene routine
  • More frequent dental cleanings if needed

For Early to Moderate Periodontitis:

  • Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) to remove bacteria and tartar from below the gum line
  • Antibiotic therapy when appropriate
  • More frequent maintenance cleanings

For Advanced Periodontitis:

  • Surgical treatments such as flap surgery or gum grafts
  • Regenerative procedures to rebuild lost tissue and bone
  • Dental implants to replace lost teeth when necessary

Dr. Moore will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs and the stage of your gum disease.

Can gum disease be prevented from coming back after treatment?

Yes! Prevention requires excellent oral hygiene: brush twice daily, floss daily, use antibacterial mouthwash, attend maintenance appointments every 3-4 months, avoid tobacco, and manage conditions like diabetes. Dr. Moore provides detailed home care instructions for long-term success.

Will I lose my teeth if I have periodontal disease?

Not necessarily. Early detection and treatment often save natural teeth. Success depends on early treatment, your commitment to care, severity of bone loss, and overall health. Even if some teeth can’t be saved, dental implants provide excellent replacement options. The sooner you seek treatment, the better your chances of keeping your teeth.
