Understanding and Managing Dental Implant Complications

Do you find yourself hiding your smile or changing how you talk or eat because of chipped, stained, or missing teeth? Dr. Moore can transform your smile, covering up these flaws with cosmetic dentistry, helping you feel confident again.

“Dental implants have one of the highest success rates in dentistry—up to 98%.”

That’s great news. But let’s be real: every procedure comes with risks. And while dental implant complications are rare, knowing what to expect (and how to avoid trouble) makes a big difference.

At Village Periodontics & Dental Implant Center, we believe in transparency. We want every patient to feel confident going into implant treatment—and empowered to handle recovery like a pro.

Let’s walk through some common implant complications, what causes them, and how we manage (or prevent) them.

Infection at the Implant Site

This is the most common issue patients worry about.

Infection—also known as peri-implantitis—can happen when bacteria build up around the implant. It can lead to inflammation, bone loss, or even implant failure if untreated.

What to watch for:

  • Swelling or redness in the gums
  • Pain or tenderness around the implant
  • Pus, bad taste, or odor

How we handle it:

  • Deep cleanings or laser therapy
  • Antibacterial rinses
  • Adjustments to your hygiene routine

The best prevention? Meticulous daily care and regular checkups.

Nerve Damage

Rare—but important to discuss.

If an implant is placed too close to a nerve, you might experience tingling, numbness, or pain in the lips, chin, or tongue.

How we prevent it: We use 3D CBCT imaging and precise surgical guides to map out the ideal placement zone—well away from nerve pathways.

Prevention = planning. That’s our specialty.

Sinus Complications (Upper Jaw Implants Only)

Your upper back teeth sit close to the sinus cavities. If implants are placed too high or without enough bone support, they can encroach on that space.

How we avoid it:

  • Detailed digital scans
  • Sinus lifts when needed to build bone

It’s all about respecting your anatomy.

Implant Movement or Failure

Sometimes the implant doesn’t integrate with the bone. This is called failed osseointegration.

It might be due to poor bone quality, smoking, infection, or just bad luck. Usually, we know within a few months.

Signs:

  • Persistent pain
  • Loose implant
  • Gums not healing properly

What we do:

  • Remove the failed implant
  • Allow healing
  • Reevaluate and plan for future replacement

We always aim for success—but we have a plan if it doesn’t go perfectly.

Bone Loss Over Time

Even a well-placed implant can experience gradual bone loss, especially if gum inflammation sneaks in.

This is why we stress ongoing maintenance so much.

With routine care and professional cleanings, we can spot early signs and treat problems before they worsen.

Loose Abutments or Crowns

Sometimes the implant itself is fine, but the crown or connecting abutment gets loose.

Good news: It’s an easy fix. We simply tighten or replace the components.

If your implant feels off—but not painful—don’t wait. Let’s check it and prevent future damage.

Allergic Reactions (Rare)

Most dental implants are made from medical-grade titanium, which is biocompatible for nearly everyone.

However, some people have rare metal sensitivities. We can explore alternative materials like zirconia if needed.

How We Prevent Complications

We believe the best problems are the ones that never happen.

Here’s what we do to keep your care safe:

  • Use digital diagnostics and CBCT scans
  • Plan with precision before surgery
  • Work with your medical team if needed
  • Educate you on hygiene and post-op care
  • Follow up closely after placement

And if something ever feels “off,” you can always call us.

If you’ve been thinking about implants but have concerns about complications, let’s talk.

We’ll walk you through it. No pressure. No sales pitch. Just answers. Schedule your consultation with Village Periodontics & Dental Implant Center and take the next step with confidence.

Am I A Candidate For Dental Implants?

Can I still get an implant if I’ve had one fail in the past?

Yes, in many cases you can. If a previous implant failed due to infection, poor healing, or improper placement, we can often plan for a successful second attempt. We’ll start by assessing your bone health and the reason for the failure. Sometimes, we’ll recommend bone grafting, additional healing time, or a different implant approach (like a mini or zygomatic implant). At Village Periodontics, we take a personalized approach to every case—especially revision ones.

What happens if I clench or grind my teeth after getting an implant?

Clenching or grinding (called bruxism) puts a lot of pressure on implants and can increase the risk of complications. Over time, this can lead to crown damage, bone stress, or implant loosening. If we know you grind your teeth, we’ll likely recommend a custom nightguard to protect your implant—especially while you sleep. This small step can make a big difference in preserving your results long-term.

Is it normal for the area around my implant to feel sore months after surgery?

Mild sensitivity or tenderness right after placement is normal. But persistent soreness months after surgery could signal an issue. It may be inflammation from trapped plaque (peri-implant mucositis), a bite alignment problem, or early bone loss. It’s important to check in with us right away so we can evaluate it. The sooner we catch it, the easier it is to treat.
